The herring is an important marine or
freshwater FISH, including the sardine,
menhaden and shad. Herrings are relatively
small but very abundant, they swim in large
schools. The adult common herring of the
North Atlantic is about 1ft(30cm) long, with
silvery sides and blue back. The menhaden, of
the Atlantic coast of North America, is a
commercially important source of oil and fish
meal. Of the smaller Herrings and related
species, the anchovies and sardines are the
most valued.
